Verify It’s Actually A Date

While this may sound stupid, it’s quite important as it can really screw things up if the other person is not really aware that it’s more than hanging out. Yes, people do just hang out…

Asking someone out properly is the key to avoid this awkward situation. Not doing this may upset or creep out the other person (especially if you’re a male). They may feel lied to or misled. It might also lead to wasting your time as perhaps the other person is already seeing someone and simply wanted to befriend you.

So how do you achieve this?

Be upfront about your intentions of it being a date to avoid misunderstandings. Although it’s not absolutely necessary to use the words “date” or “go out”, it can help clarify your intention if you feel that there might be some ambiguity especially if you fear that the other person may simply be thinking of your approach as just friends. However, at the same time, there’s no need to stress over this too much if the nature of the activity is obvious. For example, asking someone to dinner is often associated with dating.

When in doubt…be vigilant during your date. If you suspect the other person may have misunderstood the nature of the event and you’re interested in them, throw some signals their way before making a potentially awkward move such as going in for a kiss.
