It can be very awkward when you are getting ready to talk to a potential date, but you do not know what to say. When online, we have all probably had that moment in which we are talking to someone via IM or a chat room and do not know what to say to start or continue the conversation. It is almost as bad as talking to a person face-to-face and having that long, awkward moment of silence where the crickets begin to chirp. In the case of the internet, you are staring at a silent screen where no action is taking place.
Asking simple questions such as “where are you from?” can get the ball rolling. You want to start out with something simple that requires very little thought since you both are nervous anyway.
If the answer to that question is already present in his/her profile, then you want to conjure up another question, which can be the ever-so-complex “How’s the weather where you live?” Chances are this answer is not in their profile.
If it was a nice day outside, ask if there were any interesting outdoor activities going on or, if the weather was rainy and cold, ask what kind of indoor activities the person enjoyed.
There is the infamous question, “Do you have any pets?” If you are a pet lover, this may be a great place where you find something in common.
Look at his/her profile and see if he/she likes to read, go to the movies, or enjoy the outdoors. Ask questions based on the items in their profile that are not exactly clear. For example, if she states she likes to read, but she does not talk about the types of books she reads, then this could be a great starting point of the conversation.
If he/she does not live in your area, you can inquire regarding what the city is like. This can reveal his/her outlook towards the city and things he/she likes to do. From this information, you may be able to find something interesting in common.
If you are in a pinch, you can always ask the travelling question. Knowing how much he/she likes to travel can be important, especially if he/she does not live near you and may need to drive/fly when the two of you decide to meet. This can also give you an idea of what types of places he/she likes to go, such as skiing or surfing.
Ask what kind of work he/she does. A person’s occupation can reveal a great deal about his/her passions and interests. However, make sure that the question does not wander into finances or income, as this can be very offensive to many people.
Keep in mind that you cannot go wrong with the entertainment question. You can ask who his/her favorite recording artists are, favorite actors and actresses, etc. This is another way in which you can connect with a person and see what interests you have in common.
Inquiring about their hobbies is also another way you can compare interests. Some people like to make things and others like to collect things. Hobbies can say a lot about a person, and thus, if you are stuck in a rut, this question can help get the conversation wheels going.
These are ten conversation starters that banish those awkward moments of silence, as well as help you learn more about the other person. With these ten open-ended, positive questions, it will be easy to find something in common with the other person that will lead to engaging conversations.
